Backpack of rocks

You told me once that I could do anything I wanted. You were shocked and saddened that I didn’t know that before. I didn’t need to follow in anyone’s footsteps, you said. I didn’t need to be a teacher, you said, though I ended up choosing to be an arts workshop leader for the past 30+ years, besides working in the arts myself. What a gift of relief, a backpack of rocks dropped on the trail. I’d thought when I was in high school—where did I hear this?—that girls needed to follow and copy what their mothers did. Fortunately in my junior year, I found out it wasn’t true. Anyway, thanks, Mom.
