Benign twin

Look up any word you think you know. When I do, I often find its deeper meanings, roots, origins much richer than imagined. For instance, to aggravate means to weigh down (add grav-ity), throw more rocks in someone’s backpack, so to speak. Gravity: gravitas, gravel, grave. On the other hand, gravity’s benign twin— levity: levitate, level...light. Levity: “having little weight, causing bodies to rise.” Yet gravity means both “downward acceleration of terrestrial bodies” and “attraction of bodies near Earth’s surface.” The pull isn’t all downward but sideways. Einstein said, though, “Gravitation cannot be held responsible for people falling in love.”
