Today is one of my granddaughters’ birthdays—she is now 6, so I am sending her the A A Milne classic, “Now That We Are Six.” She was born with a hole in her heart. I remember my son calling me with the good and scary news from the hospital. Someone told me that maybe the hole in her heart was there to pour love into. That’s what her parents have done. They tell her she’s a superhero. She is quite the athlete, to be sure. Once when she was 4, she was way up in a tree in the backyard, and her dad came out to find her there and tell her to come down to earth, but carefully. “Dad,” she said with superconfidence in her girl abilities— “I can do this.”
