Things I learned in whitewater canoeing: Surrendering to the way things are going, by lifting the paddle from the river and letting the canoe drift toward the best channel, is a good way to be sure that nothing happens under my own power and crazed steering. Where there’s a wall, there’s a way. And as Dad’s Quaker mother would say: “Proceed as Way opens.”

That first “go” into a fast flowing river is pretty scarey especially if you’re not too experienced.
